How to Read It

• METAR reports come from airports, so they describe the aerodrome rather than a city centre, and they refresh with each routine report — typically every half hour to hour.
• On infrared imagery, colder cloud tops mean taller clouds. A cluster that turns colder and spreads quickly is a developing storm.
• Satellite and report times are in UTC — add 5 hours 30 minutes for Indian Standard Time.
• Use it as the reality check: set the same time on the forecast rainfall layer and compare where the model put the rain with where the satellite shows cloud.
