A series of low, roughly parallel hill ranges — including the Baramura, Atharamura, Longtharai and Sakhan ranges — run broadly north-south across the state, alternating with narrow valleys. Elevations are generally lower than in most other northeastern hill states. Tripura is bordered by Bangladesh on three sides, with only a narrow connection to the rest of India.
The monsoon (roughly May/June-September) is the main rainy season, bringing substantial orographic rainfall to the hill ranges. Winter is mild and comparatively dry; pre-monsoon brings periodic thunderstorms across the state.
