Mizoram is entirely hill country — a series of steep, roughly parallel north-south ridges and valleys with no significant plains — which combined with heavy monsoon rainfall makes it one of the most landslide-exposed states in India. The state consists of a sequence of parallel hill ranges (part of the Lushai Hills and the broader Indo-Myanmar border range system) separated by narrow valleys, generally running north-south and rising in elevation from west to east. There are no significant flat plains anywhere in the state.
The monsoon (roughly May/June-September) brings heavy, sustained orographic rainfall to the windward western-facing slopes as moisture moves in from the Bay of Bengal. Winter is mild and comparatively dry; pre-monsoon brings periodic thunderstorms.
