Goa is a narrow coastal strip on the Arabian Sea, with the Western Ghats (Sahyadri) rising along its eastern border. Its short, direct exposure to the sea and the Ghats means the entire state — administratively split into North Goa and South Goa — shares broadly the same Konkan-type climate, unlike larger states where coast and interior differ sharply.
The monsoon (June-September) dominates the year, bringing the full force of the Arabian Sea southwest monsoon current and orographic enhancement from the nearby Ghats. Winter and the pre-monsoon period (October-May) are dry, warm and form the bulk of Goa's tourist season, with little meaningful rainfall outside the monsoon window.
Goa receives the same intense, reliable Konkan-coast monsoon rainfall as coastal Maharashtra and Karnataka, enhanced by the nearby Western Ghats even though the state's own hill area is limited.
Direct cyclone landfall on Goa is uncommon, but a system passing offshore in the Arabian Sea can still bring heavy rain and rough seas outside the core monsoon season.
