The Chhattisgarh plain, centred on the Mahanadi river, forms the state's fertile agricultural core. To the north and northwest, the Maikal hills border Madhya Pradesh, while the Bastar plateau in the south is a heavily forested upland, part of the central Indian highlands and ecologically distinct from the plain.
Winter (December-February) is mild. Pre-monsoon summer (March-June) is hot, especially across the plains around Raipur and Bilaspur. The monsoon (June-September) is the dominant and comparatively reliable season, since Chhattisgarh lies along common tracks for Bay of Bengal-origin depressions moving into central India.
